Cielab Color Space
The 1931 cie xyz color space is mathematically derived from the results of laboratory experiments done in the 1920s in which real live human beings matched up various color patches on a disc with color patches created by shining red blue and green lights on a second disc.
Cielab color space. The cielab reference space is mathematically derived from another reference color space the very important 1931 cie xyz color space. Commission internationale de l eclairage cie a non profit organization considered to be the authority on the science of light and color has defined color spaces including cie xyz cie l a b and cie l c h for communicating and expressing object color. Cielab is the reference color model used by the paper making and graphic arts industries.
L for the lightness from black to white a from green to red and b from blue to yellow. It was defined by cie in 1976 for color communication and is widely adopted today in many industries for color control and management. With respect to a given white point the cielab model is device independent it defines colors independently of.
The cielab color space is a color space defined by the international commission on illumination in 1976. The cie 1976 l a b color space also referred to as cielab is one of the most popular color spaces for measuring object colors. The cielab color space is organized in a cube form.
As an example see figures 17 and 18 showing the color plotting diagrams for l a b. The cielab color scale is an approximately uniform color scale. Cielab was designed so that the same amount of numerical change in these values corresponds to roughly the same amount of visually perceived change.
A color space can be described as a method for expressing the color of an object using some kind of notation such as numbers. Regardless of the which color space name you call it it s important to know what l a and b stand for. In a uniform color scale the differences between points plotted in the color space correspond to visual differences between the colors plotted.
It expresses color as three values. The l a b color space also referred to as the cielab space is one of the uniform color spaces defined by the cie in 1976. This color space also called lab color space also has imaginary colors that cannot be reproduced in the physical world.
